The Sac City Jam basketball tournament is bringing fast-paced action back to the Gila River Indian Community from April 8-9, with games being played at the Gila River Wellness Center and the Boys & Girls Club.

Kelly Whitman, Recreation Sports Coordinator, said that the Sac City Jam is made up of two tournament events, the high school boy’s tournament held at the Boys & Girls Club – Sacaton Branch and the high school girl’s tournament held at the Gila River Wellness Center in Sacaton.

Entry to the tournament is free and the deadline to officially register for the event is April 1, by 5 p.m. Space is limited to a maximum of 12 boys teams and 8 girls teams.

Additionally, entrants must be 14 to 18 years old and currently attending a high school. A birth certificate and high school I.D. are required documents to enter the tournament.

Community members are encouraged to watch the events but are advised to bring their own chairs, as in-house seating is limited and may fill quickly.

We usually have a packed house for the tournaments, said Whitman. All types of people come out to watch the tournament, from the youth to the elders, everyone comes out.

“It brings out a lot of the community just because our community loves basketball, people will be out there regardless if they are supporting a team or not,” said Whitman.
