Twenty women from the Gila River Indian Community participated in the Women’s Prayer Run Day Camp on Sept. 17 in preparation for the ninth annual Women’s Prayer Run happening Nov. 5-6.

Founders Renee Jackson, Pamela Thompson and Alie Walking Badger gathered at the Aji Mountain campsite along with participants, volunteers and Women’s Prayer Run hosts.

“The camp was held to prepare women for the upcoming run and to answer any questions newcomers may have had,” said Walking Badger.

Beginning at sunrise, the women shared introductions, a blessing and brief history of the Women’s Prayer Run before trekking through District 4.

The route offered two options: one mile for those who like to walk or run and a five-mile route for the relay runners.

Convening at the end of the route in District 4, the women walked as a group back to Aji Mountain to enjoy a meal together.

The official Women’s Prayer Run, “A Prayer Journey of Gratitude,” will start in District 7, camp overnight at M Mountain and end in District 1.
