Ten members of the Gila River Indian Community were among the students of Casa Grande Union High School (CGUHS) who celebrated their high school graduation on the school’s football field at 7:30 p.m. May 23. They assembled in the gymnasium prior to taking their last walk across the stage as Casa Grande Union students while families, friends and parents watched them receive their diplomas.
“These graduates embody what it means to have Cougar pride,” said Principal Brian Mabb to the graduating class. “They have embraced our motto of inspiring excellence by finding excellence from within. And by encouraging those around them to live up to their potential, the class of 2023 has proven that they can successfully tackle life’s obstacles.”
Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis, a Casa Grande Union High School alumnus, was honored as a distinguished guest at the graduation. “I really appreciate the opportunity to participate and be recognized on behalf of the Community here,” he said.
Gov. Lewis greeted and congratulated all the Casa Grande Union High School graduates before the ceremony began. “I am so proud of the graduating class from Gila River; they look like they have some bright futures ahead,” he said.
Graduate Jacob Ochoa from District 4 said he plans on attending Mesa Community College to pursue a degree in coding, while Gracie Mark from District 3 said she’s pursuing a military career.
“I’m feeling super excited, nervous and sad at the same time,” Mark said, “because I will never really see these teachers that really helped me out. And I’m excited for my new chapter in life in my college experience at [The] Citadel in South Carolina, so I’m hoping I can make a change for my community and my family, too.”
