The Gila River Indian Community Tribal Recreation and Wellness Program recently made history by hosting the first all Native American youth soccer league in the area. With over 200 participants ranging from ages 3-15 years old, the league is focused on developing the fundamentals of soccer and fostering a love for the game among Native American youth.

In addition to teaching soccer skills, the league also prioritizes mental health and physical activity. Participants are encouraged to stay active and engage in healthy behaviors. Players received a jersey, shorts, shin guards, and socks on the first day of the league.

Overall, the combination of physical activity, social interaction, and the release of natural chemicals in the brain through sports can play a significant role in regulating mood and behavior and promoting overall mental well-being. The soccer league has eight Tot Ball Soccer teams, six 6U Ball Soccer teams, four 8U Ball Soccer teams, four 10U Ball Soccer teams, and three 15U Ball Soccer teams. Fun fact: The soccer league team names reflect the names of the communities Elder Chair Volleyball teams.

Tribal Recreation and Wellness, organizers of the league, hope to provide a positive and supportive environment for Native American youth to come together, learn new skills, and build lasting friendships through the beautiful game of soccer. The league has already received positive feedback from participants and families, with many expressing excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of such a groundbreaking initiative. Due to the weather the League will be moving indoors to the District 3 Gymnasium starting Saturday, June 1, 2024
